ASN in Musical School

Supporting inclusive practice

The resources in Musical School’s ASN section support musical activities and learning with younger children and students with additional support needs or disabilities. They are appropriate for a range of settings, including special schools, alternative provision, and mainstream schools, across all ages and abilities.

Every resource in the section can be mixed and matched with other content and materials on the Charanga platform or your own. Collect everything together in My Workspace or use Charanga’s Scheme Builder tool to create a set of resources or a bespoke scheme that perfectly matches your setting.

You can use Yumu, Charanga’s student-facing workspace, to share resources or lesson content with your students.

Charanga’s ASN section has four areas:

The Anyone Can Play Scheme

The Anyone Can Play Scheme is a standalone set of progressive units with lesson plans. It is particularly popular with teachers and teaching assistants looking to build their confidence in music teaching. The Scheme can also support students at any point on the learning difficulty spectrum. Although there are whiteboard resources, the Scheme works equally well without them.

CREATE

The award-winning CREATE provides music technology lessons and projects for students using iPads, teaching them how to compose, improvise, and perform. The projects are designed to work across the ASN spectrum, from PMLD settings to PRUs, and are suitable for all learners.

Resource Library

The ASN Resource Library brings together bespoke versions of the most popular Musical School resources used by teachers in special schools across the Charanga community.

Signed Songs

The Signed Songs collection is a set of videos with signs from musician and music teacher Samantha Harper. The collection offers an additional way to communicate the words and meaning of the repertoire and is presented in alphabetical order for easy access.

OHMI Fingering Charts

In partnership with OHMI, Charanga provides Fingering Charts for One-handed Instruments. They are available as downloads for left- and right-handed recorders and B♭ clarinets.
